An Interview with Joseph Kahn

This interview took place during the summer of 2000, while I was still a correspondent for Peel.com, a Chicago-based, pop culture website. I initially became a fan of Joseph Kahn’s work after he directed two videos for the New Edition reunion (“Hit Me Off”, “I’m Still In Love With You”) way back in 1996. In the four years between the New Edition videos and this interview, Joseph Kahn's videos had won two MTV Video Music Awards in 1998, and his work would win two more that September. Kahn’s resume up to that point had also included: Janet Jackson (“Doesn’t Really Matter”), the Backstreet Boys (“Larger Than Life”, “Backstreet’s Back”), Sisqo (“Thong Song”), Brandy/Monica (“The Boy Is Mine”), Destiny’s Child (“Say My Name”, “Jumpin’ Jumpin”), and more.

Since our surreal conversation that July, Joseph Kahn (who was only 27 at the time) has become an even bigger name than before, and he’ll probably keep getting bigger. At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, Kahn was awarded a "Moonman" (Best Direction) for Eminem's “Without Me” video, which also won Video of the Year, Male Video of the Year, and Rap Video of the Year. And, another one of his videos, (Moby’s “We Are All Made of Stars”) won for Best Cinematography too.

Some more recent Joseph Kahn music videos include DMX’s “X Gonna Give It To Ya” and Mariah Carey’s “Boy (I Need You)”. And, later this year, Kahn will be making his feature film debut with Torque -- an action film starring none other than Ice Cube. With all of that said, Njs4ever.com is extremely proud to present to all of you, an interview with filmmaker Joseph Kahn. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

[ Knyte ]
